INDIAN-FAMINE RELIEF FUND.

MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the executive of the Indian 'famine relief fund was held in the Agricultural Hail Board Room yesterday afternoon, and attended,by Messrs John Roberts (in the chair, G. L. Denniston, A. Johnston C. Brown, 11. Glendining, C. ft. Smith, J. N. Lawson. •and AY. Davidson. Apologies were received from his Worship the Mayor, and from Messrs Keith Ramsay and AA'. E. Theomin.

". The Hon. Secretary reported that he had communicated-with the mayors of the different .■provinces in reference lo collecting funds, and in most'of the centres the" matter had now been taken up. A letter was nko sent, to the ministers of religion and.mayors and 'chairmen of various town and country districts, asking their support and co-operation, and in several instances satisfactory replies wore received. He also reported that a quantity of grain had already been received and had been handed over to Messrs AVright, Stephenson, and Co. to dispose of to the best advantage, that firm having agreed to receive store, and sell'free of charges. _ Mr G. -Featherstone, hon. secretary of the InveTcargill Indian famine fund, wrote advising that in tho opinion of his committee the interests of thn fund would be best furthered by Southland, act-in;? on its own account.—On the motion of the Chairman, the sucrjrestion was agreed to. His AVorship the Mayor of Christchurch wrote advismcr that steps had been taken lo collect subscriptions, mid already the matter was well in hand.

Mi- Edwin Aslin wrote that Mr A. AY. Laker, from Johannesburg, would give a lec.tnre m aid of tlio famine fund in the Choral Hall, entitled " The Boers and Causes of the J. resent■• AVar," and asking the pitronaao of the committee.—lt was unanimously decided t.iat the committee should crant their patronage and assist in every possible way in makin-r tne lecture a success. Greig, the Manso, Sandymount, -wrote notifying that it ivas intended to can--vass the whole of the Peninsula for subscriptions m aid of the funds, instead of bavina special collection in the church. ° Mr G. , A special effort m connection with lhe ■jiidiaji famine relief fund was made in the Mornington Wesleyan Church on Sunday last. The_mornmg service was couclucted by the Key. Mr Lewis, who ably presented the claims of the suffering Hindoos. The evening service-ivas conducted by Mr Jos. Louden, and the collections showed a liberal response to the appeals made. The Sunday school children have decided to devote next tauudny s contribution to the fund.
