GENTLEMEN'S MERGER,

By keeping a valu-' able stock, and by the honest and up-to-dute principles which..he lias .established, he has been quickly able to obtain a prominent place in the trade. Mr Bentbam is a native of Bradford, tlia celebrated woollen centre in Yorkshire." He was. engaged in the drapery trade in that city. and. afterwavds spent, four or five years in London with, the well-known drapery firm of Tarn and Co., Newington Causeway. Twentylive years ago he came, to New: and spent the first. seven . years in JBalclutha in , a general store.. He then. Sv;ent to Woitati. where, in conjunction .with:* Mr Alexander Kilpatrick, lie purchased a,"' diaperf. business. About two years later the partners took over a. branch' badness in Kaikprai.... They worked these two together, for-three or. four years,, when.;.they, dissolved partnership, Mr . Bentham acqiiiring full possession of the Kaikorai business. • He (Was there engaged for .eight- or nine years'as a general storekeeper, whereupon, in September,. 1891, he : purchased his present business in George street, Dunodin, from Mr W. D. Houston1." This Business was for some-years carried.: on. by Mr Houston in conjunction with his Princes street establishment, Mr Bentham quickly got a grip of the local trade, and 15 months after taking possession :he found it neceis-. 'i-ary to extend the premises, by securingthe adjoining shop. He now has -two shops, with two entrances, one used for hats and underclothing,; and the other for gentlemen's general mercery. The stock displayed, is of a high quality, and, it is to secure this .and to sell v afc a low. pricethat Mr Bentham devotes himself. He does a. big business in hats and shirts, his hats " ranging from the regulation top. hat to the. soft felt variety. A portion of the stock - of. shirts is made by Mr Bentham,. while : the remainder .is imported, all ,the..dress ■ shirts coming, within . the. latter category. '■ ■ His name is stamped on all the goods' \in underclothing, or in ties,, collars, Vand'tJ'e other, kinds:of mercery,.Mr Bentiiam's.stock.' is not to be beaten, and affords a spieiiclid value for the money charged. Having a buyer, at" Home, he'gets his goods..direct . from the manufacturers, and therefore, ob? tains exactly what he. wants without'the ; " expense of a middleman.
