MR CARGILL AND QUARANTINE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir.,—i'lio perfunctory letter of Mi E. B. ! Cargill in your issue of to-day is scarcely lo be wondered at, seeing that he has a quarantine station of his own out at the " Cliffs." His sang froid is really beautiful, when against expert opinion and common .ense he characterises the efforts put forth to prevent the introduction of one of the most deadly diseases known as oppressive and unnecessary. His present effusion is on all fours with the attitude taken up by him when mayor of the city. It is within the recollection of most of us that he paid an official visit to the mouth of the sewer in Stuart street in the interests lof sanitation, and—" ye Rods !"—could not smell anything. It .may na as he remarks— viz., that so far the disease in Sydney has not assumed alarming proportions, thanks to the means usad ar.d precautions taken to prevent its spread,—lr.it I trust the local authorities, as well as those in other centres, will not relax their efforts one iota; but rather prosecute them with increased vigour. prevention in all cases being better than cure, Mr E. B. Cargill's opinion notwithstanding.—l am, etc.. Serum.

Roslyn, April 21. c TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—Mr E. B. Cargill's letter in your today's issue should awaken the intelligence of the people, for it carries truth, weight, and common sense with it. If the powers that be do not cease, to stretch and strain the quarantine laws before our commerce is ruined and the breadwinners are thrown out of employment, great will be the wail against the only supposed ruler. I am astonished that our " shepherds" (members) have not eomo to the front to case down this Li-beraliam-oum-mad-ness.—T am, etc., Tnos. H. Hodge. Port Chalmers, April 21.
