MINING NOTES FROM TUEPAKA

(From .Our Wetherstone's-1 Correspondent.*

April 17.—Since, my. last" communication the claims here have met with a slight check, through, the Heavy "iaiii we"had' on the sth • and 6th inst. ■. The Crescent .race broke away at the head of. one-of the Wctherstones gullies, and the Golden llise's flood race, not being large enough, to carry the storm, water, hurst in on them and undermined some oi the pipc9, causingl them t'o> fall, so' that some of the joints broke.. After nbout 10 hours' steady work by Mr Adams;-in making and rivelting new joints, the claim started work again. -The Golden Crescent.soon repaired the break in their race; hut a more serious break took place the next day at" the head of the race, which took two days or more to repair. It is a misfortune. Tor them; having bo dam for -storage, and their water" running to waste. The wet days and a few diiys alter is the only chance they have o£ steady elevating, without stopping a minute. They.-have" taken a good bits out of Ballarat Hill already. The old miners thought the chvy would be too hard and dceo for the water from the nozr.le to have ranch cEeet, en it; but it turns out to be of a sandy and friable, nature, with a good depth of grave! underneath. Sometimes tho Golden .Crescent men put all the water in the nozzle and sweep.the -"clay down the gully and past the jet or elevator. The dredge still" keeps steadily at work. The returns for some weeks v.-ere very good, running into two figures, and the first figure not a "one" either.
