PORT CHALMERS.
The regular meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last evening; present—The Mayor (Mr De Matis), Crs S. H. Wilson, W. M. Innes, \V. Pedlow, J. Shanks, J. Tait, A. Cable, C. M. Inverarity, J. M. Cameron, and J. Watson. Apologies were received from Crs Weir and Edgar. ■ . ■ CORRESPONDENCE. Mr P. W. M'Lean, district Engineer of Railways, wrote acknowledging the council's letter conveying its consent to temporary alterations in the streets at Mussel Bay, in order to facilitate the departure of the fourth contingent from Port Chalmers on the 2ith inst., and thanking them for their ready concurrence with hi 3 request.—Received. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary's Office stating that there was reason to believe that the bubonic plague is disseminated by nits and other vermin, and that the Central Board of Health had suggested that local Boards of Health at the principal seaports should take slcyis to destroy such vermin, and as far as possible prevent them landing froni vessels. It -was important that dead animals should be destroyed by fire without delay. The

Mr B. Olson,, corporation tenant of the oldcourthouse, wrote offering'to pay Is per week extra rent provided. some improvements were made in the corporation' yard.—Alter some discussion the letter was referred to the Works: Committee, with' power to act! . Mr T. II: Hodge, custodian of the baths, wrote that he -had .handed the keys.of tke~ baths to the town clerk, and requested that £4, the amount of his honorarium, be paid' to him.— The request, was. gianted., .... .. . Er.roiiTS. . . _ •.... ■ ■ : ■ The Works Committee reported on the work p» which the insoector and staff had been, .engaged since last "meeting. The inspector of nuisances had been engaged .in making a thorough inspection of various places, and reported on various, matters. The committee recommended that tenders be invited' re the nightsoU contract.—Adopted. . The Water Committee reported that, in view of the large/quantify of water necessary for railway purposes on Saturday, 21th inst., the ratepayers be notified that it would be prudent to secure sufficient for domestic purposes on Friday, 23rd inst., and up to 8 a.m. on. Saturday, 2«h inst., and that the water continue to be turned up on ilie high levels from P. a.m. to 8 a.m. on the latter .<lato. The number of trains running on the 2»h would require to be,; sunpliert with water with the utmost promptitude, and therefore the supplies would be needed all day on the lower leveU.^-Tho report was adopted. " • The Finance Committee recommended the payment, of accounts aggregating £132 18s. The receipts sinco last meeting had been: General account. £74 i)s; water account, £53 4s 7d;—total receipts. £127 13s 7d.. Coupons amounting to £25 5s Id had been paid by tbe^ bank since last meeting of council. —The report was adopted. GENERAL. Cr Innes moved—".That the clerk write to the manager of railway calling, attention to the quantity of fish offal thrown over at the fishermen's lauding at the Bowen pier."—Seconded by Cr Pedlow, and carried. ■ . .
