' :,A,meetiug of the Port Chalmers Organising Committee to make? necessary arrangements for the'departure of tlie fourth contingent was held last evening, when it was decided to ask a deputation fronr the Dunedin Organising Committee to meet the committee on the Sth inst., in order that mutually satisfactory arrangements might be made for the occasion, various suggestions as to decorating were discussed and plans exhibited. It.was arranged tb have a cycle stand in the dock reserve, in charge of Mr Godfred, for wliich a charge of 6d will be made; also a carriage stand in Beach street. GENERAL ITEMS. Mr James Mills has received from Jlr.Brydone, on behalf of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, a cheque for £200 towards the patriotic fund. The company has, in addition to this, presented six horses to the fourth contingent. Cr Shirtcliff, treasurer to the committee appointed by the Mornington Borough Council, reported to the council last evening that tho total cash receipts amounted to £163 4s lOd, and that donations in kind at a value' of about £12 had also been received. It would appear that different portions of lhe colony are being treated differently by tbe Government in regard to the organisation of the .fourth contingent. The arrangement as to the Otago and Southland section of 150 mien is based on the. understanding that the men shall be fully equipped by public subscription, the cost of equipment being estimated by the Government at £50 per man. It now seems that 10 men are .to1.-bo supplied from another portion of. the jbolohy, which undertakes to hear the expense to the exteat of,£4ojper man. Need' it' be said-thaf these men-arc 'from-the West .Coast? 'The'telegram from the Premier oiji the subject of their acceptance runs": " A.'Mathesoii; -mayor, Gi-ey-mouth, —Do not like to refuse ; men .fdrVsako. of £10 each, but rather than disappoint them and for their sake, shall accept,..'bi'i£ at the same time think Greymouth conld find £100 if it so wills, rather-than put me in a position of breaking the conditions.' However, send the men along.— -R.J. Seddon." it is somewhat invidious that while the Otaco.' and Southland representation has been limited to 150 men, and that many excellently qualified applicants "liave consequently had to be sent away from .the camp, for whom complete equipments would have been forthcoming if ' they had been accepted, men should for their own sakes and so that they should .not snffar disappointment, be accepted by the Government with an incomplete equipment from another part of the colony. AiVe have_ received from Mr Herbert Seaton, of the Rpyal Arcade, a sample of the new medal they "have struck in connection wiih the departure of the fourth contingent. Tho ■medal "in question has been accepted, by his. Excellency the Governor, and is quite the best design we have s.een. A portrait of her Majesty and the words " British-Transvaal War, 1900," are on one side, and oh the reverse appears a Rough Rider on horseback and " Success to oiir New Zealand Rough Riders." The medal is in sterling silver and bronze, and, surrounded with tricolour ribbon, forms a- pretty souvenir of the colony's patriotism in the Imperial cause.!. ' ;. •The sum of £17 15s 6d has been'received from the gangers and platelayers on, Inspector Chisholm's section between Greytown and Clinton. ■ The subscribers were: —Sympathiser. £2 2s ;T.
