THE SENTENCE COMMUTED. (Pke United Press Association.) ]\ CHRISTCHURCH, February.ls. .A..meet-ing. oTthe at which the Premier and tke""Hqns. "J. M'Kenzie and W. C. Walker were present, was held in Christchurch,; this morning, when the verdict of the jury in the Petone murder case was reviewed. , The jury .had recommended Wolfe to mercy, and the''Chief Justice had concurred in the recommendation. The Cabinet decided to recommend his Excel-, lency'the Governor to extend the olemency of the Crown.in the case. An Executive Council meeting was afterwards held, at which his Excellency accepted the advice of his Ministers, and Wolfe's sentence was accordingly commuted to one of hard labour for the term of'his natural life.
