The ''letterbress; the compilation of which has : entailed^, many months' research among old nevVspaper files and records of various descriptions, is from the pen of the favourite Witness' writer,' FABIAN BELL, and though fact, not fancy, has been the prevaling note of the; compilation throughout, the narrative is written in a manner which cannot fail to interest the readers from beginning to end. It is at this 'early stage scarcely possible to give a full list of the photogravures which "will illustrate'the story of marine disaster on our rugged coast-line, but they will be worthy of the subject. "FABIAN" BELL" has:given her interesting compilation the telling title of "The Toll of the Sea," and explains that it is a, complete record of the chief wrecks which have occurred in New Zealand waters from the year 1795 to the present date, together with, the most interesting events connected with them. OTITER FEATURES OF THE PUBLICATION. The story of " The Maori Leap," told in connection with the projecting wall oi rock which attracts the eye on the Taieri River soon after leaving Henley for the Taieri Mouth, has had many exponents, and this is the siibjsct adopted by Mr F. SANBI/ 9 The facts, dealt, with iv the narrative have been carefully gleaned- irom the lips of one or .two of the survivors of the older generation I of Maoris at Henley, and the writer has dealt with his subject in an interesting and pleasing manner. This sketch contains s, number oi illustrations from photographs of the various points dealt with, including one of Korakc Matene. the Maori Leap, John Bull's Head, Moua Hill, besides views near Governor's I Chiniiicy (Taieri River). Anothe: phase of South Island Maori life is dealt with by Mr A. W. Maura-is in his sketch "the .iuum of mm TAiITAO," a reminiscence of the early whaling days, ir which some well-depicted, characters are deali with. This sketch has been SPECIALLY ILLUSTRATED BY mv f. hodnuns, a fact which adds very materially to its attractiveness. " FEDORA " continues one of her exquisiti Children's Tales, entitled "THE TRUTH TALISMAN." This has also been specially illustrated by Mis: Hodgkins. "Dot and her Little Folks" is a household term among Witness readers, and a happ; suggestion made by one of the juvenile cor respondents that a group should be gatherec together for reproduction in the Christina: Annual is being carried into effect, and thi: will unquestionably be an interesting fcatur* ■ of the Annual. The Anmial will, as xisuai, contain the TEN PRIZE TALES, which will be again illustrated by Mis: Hodgkins; while THE 6HROIJQLO6IOAL RECORE will be brought up to date in the same inanne as was done last year.
