TOTAL ABSTINENCE OR PROHIBITION.
TO THE EDITOR. - ' Sir, —Tour correspondent "Saeerdps** must pardon me that while entirely accepting the texts he quotes as warnings against excess, I totally deny the conclusion he draws from them—that they inculcate "total-absti-nence, and, by implication, prohibition as well. Abstinence, when either necessary or expedient, yes! Prohibition, no! Abstinence concerns myself alone; prohibition attacks my_ neighbour. I have a perfect right to abstain from anything and. everything I may deem injurious or inexpedient, but I have no right to enforce my opinions or convictions uponniy neighbour whether he will or" not. This is the aim of prohibition, and it strikes both at individual liberty and individual' responsibility.. I trust you will kindly insert these few lines, but I will not intrude again :on your valuable space.—l am, etc., I • Delta.
