AUCKLAND, June 20.
The Newton Borough Council asked the Assets Realisation Bd>ard to1 put a price on 40 acres in the centre of the borough for a public park, and received a reply that £4000 was the price. The mayor thought the .price too high, but negotiations will be resumed.
The auctioneers held a meeting re the proposed Auctioneers' Act Amending Bill. It was decided tc arrange fof opposition to the passage of the bill.
Detective' Maddern, Sergeant Murray, and others are engaged investigating the jewellery robbery at Taurariga. John Till, a baker, was fined 10s and 30s costs for working an apprentice on Saturday afternoon.
Ex-Judge Rogan, of the Native Lands Court, is dead.
A concert held in the government House ballroom, under the direction of Herr Smidfc, in aid of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, realised £85. Mr Prouse, Mdlle. Trebelli, and other vocalists gave their sendees free. The debt of the society has been wiped out, and the society is £85 to the good through the liberality of the Governor and Lady Ranfurly. All the expenses of the concert were borne by the Governor. Lady Ranfurly has offered medals as first and second prizes to the Horticultural i Society, for both girls and boys, for the' best cultivated garden, grown' .under the supervision of the society, the wbrk solely of the. children.
WELLINGTON-, June 20. At' the instance of the Premier a conference of mining' experts is being held to frame amendments needed in the mining regulations. ■
At the annual meeting cf the Wellington branch of the Journalists' Institute there was a largo attendance. The ' ' report showed a balance in hand of £28 9s 6d with liabilities of about £9. Mr J. il Kelly, editor of the New Zealand Times, was elected chairman., and -Mr H. J. Kearney secretary and treasurer, wibli Messr| .Lukin,-, Atack, Earl, Harrison, Reeves',- Ilott, EeGrove, Perm, Parkinson. and\Peyton as a committee. The branch adopted the proposals for affiliation with the English Institute. .
' TIMARU, June 20. The Hospital Board to-day - resolved to. terminate the system of tin honorary medical staff of three. The town doctors are in favour of a resident officer. The present system is declared to work unsatisfactorily; and the recent friction has led to the resolution to terminate- it.
