SHIRE LINE STEAMERS.

The s.s. Morayshire arrived at Las Palmas on Monday, 19th inst.; all well.

THE VANISHING SAILING SHIP,

Sir W. 11. White, in his presidential address at t!)G meeting of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, held last month, remarked that in 1860 the .British merenntile marine included 8242. sailing ships of over 3,000,000 tons net register as against 527 steamers of 307,000 tons; at tlie end of 1897 the figures were 1604 sailing ships of less than 2,000,000 tons and 3715 steamers of nearly 5,756,000 tons net. The use of iron for shipbuilding commenced about 60-years ago, and in 1880, out of 404,000 tons built, 384,000 tons were of iron and 20,000 tons wood. Steel was used to a very limited, extent prior to 1875. In 1381 the total tonnage of pteel ships was less than 6 per cent, of the aggregate tonnage of iron iind stesl ships. In 1892 98 per cent., and in 1898 99 per cent, of the new tonnage launched p/as steel, iron being only used for trawlers md small vessels of iess than 250 tons. 'In all these changes mechanical engineering had, he said, played an'important part. British supremacy in shipbuilding and shipowning was not an accident, it having been won by the enterprise of shipowners and by the readiness of shipbuilders to make new departures in materials and methods of construction, in types of ship and character of equipment. He then dealt with mechanical engineering in the shipyard and on board ship.
