DUNEDIN BOWLING CLUB.
The following is-a summary, of the. annual report of the Dunedin.Bowling Club, approved by the committee, which'will be submitted at: the annual meeting,.to be held next week:— J.i
The committee, in presenting their ■ report; of last year's proceedings, congratulate:, members on having had a'successful season, as far1 as finance and the result of interclub fixtures* are concerned. The weather has unfortunately been distinctly against, bowling,';and there has probably^ been less play on the green than in former years. The committee would urge upon; members the necessity of paying lip their sub-! scriptions earlier, in the season than a number: of them do, to meet the heavy calls made regu'-: larly upon the club's funds.:. Coming to the' interclub matches, the committee'are in a position to inform members that the, club has what; may bo considered an .unbeaten* record for the past season. Out of seven matches played 'all5 were won, with the exception' of the one against Port Chalmers, and in -that instance the gamewas not finished, owing'to,'darkness setting'in'. This match was lost-by''6he"poirit. The usual game with the .Lawrence Club (not : included in the fixtures) v. as played at Lawrence, and, as invariably happens, our country friends'proved the victors. The match) withlMilton was not played, a sufficient number of players not being available to visit Milton. 'Several rinks played in the tournament at CliristcHurch; but,, unlike the experience in. other tournaments, the players constituting'the rinks failed to gain any plaee^ of distinction: in any of:the games, played.. The same result was experienced at the Oamaru tournament. In .our club* contests,: the championship was won by Mr W. M-Tl--wrick, with Mr C. Haynes as runner-up. The president' 3 prize was, secured by Mr T. G-." ■Vouug, Mr J. White being runner-up; and the trophy offered by the vice-president fell-to Mr J. Gilmour, who beat Mr J. Thomson in the final. The entries for. the Four-bowl' Match were fairly numerous, and the successful pai* were Messrs J. Hunter -and. Ball, who, in the final, wrested first place, froiji their opponents, Messrs F. Peake and D. L. 'Hutton. In addition to these events, two subscription: matches were played among members at. Easter, Messrs \V. Scott and P. Dow. and Messrs W. M'llwriek and W. Scott'achieving premier positions. It is with regret that' the. committee have to record the death of two, club members during the year, the deceased gentlemen b'eiiie Mr A. Meikie and Mr -W. Thomson (of Filleul street). One or two members have dropped out of tne ranks oi the.club, but, like last year,, there has been a large influx of new members*, most of whom have taken,■very, kindly to, the game, and already show considerable proficiency. In this connection must be' mentioned Dr Black, the winner; of Mr Holmes's prize for juniors, and Mr J. Rennie, who secured the second prize, the gift of Mr James Wallace. The condition of the green has not been conspicuously good, which fact is greatly, accounted for by the extremely bad weather experienced. The tennis and-fives courts have not been much used, but the time is now at hand when they may be expected to be broughtprominently into requisition; Card tournaments were engaged in last winter, and the clnb proved well able to hold its own, winning the four games played. A regrettable circumstance of the past year has been Mr W. B. laylor's severe illness, whicli has placed it beyond that gentleman's power to give countenance to the club's affairs in the way he undoubtedly would otherwise have done as president. Tho thanks of the club' are dv» to Messrs Taylor, M'Phe'rscn, Holmes, and Wallace for prizes donated,' and to the various committees for services rendered.
