ARRIVAL OF THE SOUTHESK,
'The first of the expected sailing vessels from overseas "put ■in her appearance at Olago Heads at 10 p.m. of Saturday, and was boarded by Senior Pilot M'Donald, who brought hor up to the anchorage in the powder ground at- 10 a.m. yesterday. She was met
on arrival by the health officer (Dr. G. Hodges), with Captain Gray, surveyor of customs, aud all being well was at once granted pratique, and promptly'cleared in.' The Southesk is a handsome olipper barque of 1080 tons'net register, built at Dundee in 1887 by Messrs A. Stephens and Sons, and owned by Messrs Bruce and Co., of that port. She is commanded •by Captain W. 0. Hill, who joined her when she first commenced her career, and who comes here for the first time. He'is accompanied by Mr Longmuir as chief/and Mr Barter as second officer. It will be. remembered that Mr Longmuir was last here as master of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Shipping Company's ship_ Euterpe (which has since been sold), and itwill be hardly necessary to State that under his auspices the Southesk* .comes, into port •in first-class order. Shois consigned to Messrs Dalgety and Co. (Limited), of this city, and brings 1999 tons of dead" weight and measurement cargo, the bulk of it'(lsoo tons)' being for Dunedm, and the remainder for Wellington. In addition to this; she has rather over 20 tons of powder and'dynamite stowed in a properly constructed magazine.: This she will discharge in the'lower, .harbour,:'and then tow up to Dunedin. The Southesk'has occupied 95 days on hor passage 'from anchor to anchor, an exceedingly good one considering the winds and weather she experienced, but for which it would have been -materially shortened. Neither her N.E. nor S.E. trades was good, and no steady westerlies marked 'her passage across the Southern- Ocean.' The Southesk left Greenock on March 15, proceeded to -sea, and cleared the land on March 19. . Thence she had E. and N.E. winds, attended by heavy cross seas tip to March 25 in lat. 34- N., long. 23 W., followed .by light, variable S. and S.W. winds up to March 30, and on that day took N.W. and northerly*winds, whioh merged into the trades, which she took on April 3 in lat, 18 N., long. ,25 W. . The north-east trades proved very moderate and light, taking her up to the equator, :* which'she-crossed--on April .12 in long. 26 W., twenty-eight days-out. After crossing the line she had baffling" winds from S. to 'S.W.,* and took up the S.E. trades in lat. IS. They proved variable, and unsettled, and, gave out in lat. 22 S. on April 22. Thence she had a spell of heavy weather, which set in from N.W:, going to S.W. aud S.E., and increasing to furious gales, accompanied "by tremendous seas," which filled the decks and .caused the sliipyto Talibur: heavily. This weather moderated in lat. 34 S., long. 11 W, and thence she had strong S. and S.W. winds, which took her across the meridian of Greenwich on May 5 in lat. 37 S., and afterwards she had variable winds from S. to N., with very little westerlies, and on May 11 rounded the Cape of Good Hope:in lat. 40 S.y-'ori the fifty-sixth day out/having-on the previous.day carried away her.main topmast trestle tree, which considerably retarded her progress. -Her passage across the *. Southern Ocean was, marked by N.E. to S.E. winds, accompanied by very,-Jioayy.- cross • se^s, and she crossed the meridian of 'Cape^Leuwin -on May 31, seventy-seven days out, in lat, 44 S. Afterwards she had N.E. and northerly winds down to the; Island of Tasmania, which she passed on June 7, and thence encountered northerly to N.N.E. winds, .with heavy fogs, until the 16th inst;, when;she';s-ghted the land north of the Nuggets. Had fine weather along the coast, and/arrived off Otago Heads at 10 p.m. of the 17th inst., towing up to the quarantineygrou'nd as above. Neither ice' nor wreckage was seen while crossing the Southern Ocean, and the easting was made between the parallels, of Lit. 42 and 44 south.
