BUN TUCK AND CAPTAIN JONES.
TO THE __DITOIS. . , .J? 1?'-" 1 regret to observe that the two notabilities whose names appear above are causing my friend Mr Wathen much trouble of mind, which I should like to do what I can tc relieve. A parliamentary committee investigated the Bun Tuck business, and the evidence and report are embodied in a parliamentary paper, which Mr Wathen can readily procure, ahd in which he will find my opinion of the matter stated in the committee's report. As said" report was, I presume, published in the columns of the local press, I saw no reason for repeating it, and I may point out that there were many other, subjects than Bun Tuck—live ones —I did not deal with. Captain Jones's is a live one which has not yet been reported on by a parliamentary committteo. Mr W. is quite right; I did speak on it, but I did not throw doubt on the confession of Captain Allman having been made—l would not presume when the Premier says it has. \ What I did say about- the Jones's case was briefly this: "If there was no necessity bi intention to strain the law, whj all the telegraphy and minuting, and memo, writing and consultation. And why was the whole thing not dropped when Captain Allman staled j that ' Nothing could be done '—and ' that the sea service was insufficient.' "Who kept it going after that; "Why, Ministers." Then I said later on: " It is now evident that Captain Allman is to be the selected scapegoat, and if he was so soft as to be led from his duty because of Jones's pleadings for his family, he deserves all he got; but-was he so soft because of Jones's pleadings? " —I ametc., Dunedin, June 3. Ales. Sligo.
