CITY POLICE COURT.
Thursday, April 20. '<; (Before Mr .E. H. Carew, 8.M.) Theft.-A lad named William Price was ehareed with the theft, on the 17th April, of 271b of lead, valued at 3a id, the property of A. and T. Burt.-Oetectivc M'brath stated that accused-was in tho employ of Messrs A. and T. Kurt, and was seen by Mr K»ox, foreman of. phimbers, column out ol a part ot the wemises where'he had no business to be. He wa« carrvmo-a kit, which uaunlly contained his lunch, akl Air Knox asked him what he had there, and he replied " Nothing. Mr Knox, however, found the -kit contained 271b of lead. Accused then said that others had been having a. lark with him, and had put the lead into the kit.—Evidence was given by Robert Knox and Frederick "Whinam.—Accused called Wm. Childs.who said lie played a lark on accused by putting the lead into the kit at the dinner hour, because he had played a lark oh witness the day before by sewing up his coat sleeve.— Corroborative evidence was given by Josepn Hood and George Cole, and accused then made a. statement on oath.—His Worship said he thought, perhaps, the witnesses for the defence had spoken the truth, to a certain extent, but when they said it was done in joke, ho was satisfied it was not. If accused had not been met by Mr Knox there would have been nothing heard of the matter. His Worship decided to remand the case to Tuesday next for the probationer officer's report.
