LAUNCESTON, April 20.
Tho Union Steam Ship Company's si earner Australia-, with 20 passengers and 220 tons of cargo, struck on ji roof on West Point, at the entrance to Arthur River, early yesterday morning. The captain ran her aground in a sinking condition on Sandy Beach.
Tho passengers and crew are safe. It is doubtful if it will be possible to save tho vessel. Assistance has been sent. Tho details of tho accident are meagre.
The Australia, which was in charge of Captain Rodgors, was formerly employed in the East Coast trade of the North 1 eland, but was sent to Tasmania somo thrco years ago in order to meet the incrcaeo of trade- in that island. She wan a stoel vessel with twin screws, and was built in Dumbarton in 1884 by Messrs Burroll and Sons. Her gross register was 459 tons, and her indicated horse-power 370. She was 150 ft 4in long, with a beam of 26ft lin.
Tho head office in Dunedin slate that the Kia Ora has been sent to the assistance of the Australia.
