At the annual Colonial Institute .dinner 250 guests were present. . The Earl of Aberdeen presided.
Vice-admiral Smith, formerly in charge of the Australian station, ridiculed the t:sa of submarine boats, and recalled the fact that Australasia was the first to assist the navy "by subsidising the" auxiliary squadron. Lord Kimbcrley . proposed the toast of '"The United limpire." He said Britishers were equal to the burdens cast upon them. Sir P. 0. Fysh, Agent-general for Tasmania, responded. Lord "Jersey rejoiced at the close fraternal connection between every portion of the Empire. He was confident the Imperial Parliament' would never stifle the aspirations of any colony. Sir J. E: Salomons, Agent-general for New South Wales, announced amid ■ cheers the receipt of a cable from Mr Reid, the New South Wales Premier, conveying the news that the Federal Bill had passed the Legislative Council.
