Rules governing competition in cere- . moniai work were to hand; One of the repre- . sontatives to the recent session of the Grand f Lodge forwarded his views.upon matters, there ■ discussed. The fortnightly meeting of the" Loyal Valley ,: :Lo:lge, .M.U.1.0.0.F., was. held in "the lodge ,■ room, North Dunedin Drill Hail, on Monday night, iV;G. Bro. Alexander presiding. There was a large', attendance of members and visit-' , ing brothers. When.the business of the lodge had been transacted harmony was indulged in, : the programme for the evening being'in the hands, of G.M. Bro. Bobson, whp read a 'mpsf ■ able and interesting paper on ''The !Life of Charles Dickens,' and thereafter several very .interesting.readings from Dickens's works were "given, between which several members riontr'-'----bntcd tongs, a very .pleasant evening being spe:it. Two candidates were initiated. The toast of the visitors was responded to by-'P.G. : 3ro. Wilkius. (on. behalf of Loyal Difliediri' Lodge), Bro. Searle (on behalf of the .Loyal ; ,oamaru Lodge), E.S. Bro. Broadfoot (on be.halt of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge), and ■ ;Bio Stevens (on behalf the Loyal llosgiel Lodge). ■ ' . - . ' ; The fourth annual meeting of the King street Congcpgationiil Church Young Men's Literary '»m!d took, the form of an open night, "the : l-;ev. (.!-. Jlpighway oresidiiji?. The chairmnn re-. ■icrrcd to the good work clone by the members ■during the past session, and, .-judging by the sylla'u.l3 presented for this year's work, the session should be even more profitable. Mr ■W. Sinclair and Mr. T. Davidson also spoke on the work of the guild. The report and. balance sjheat for the past session were read an:l adopted. The following contributed musical and elocutionary items:— Songs—Miss F. Oliver. Miss L. OHvc-r, Mrs Mitchell, Messrs ■ :H. Bcjinet and J. Munn; recitations—Mrs Hul-sen-and Miss J". Shatp; violin solo, Miss D. Moore. The accompanists were Miss D. Moore;----j Hiss F. Dyer, and Mr I. Moore. Mr H. Miti thcll proposed a vote of thanks to the per- | lormers and helpers, which was carried by ' acclamation. !■ The Hanover street Baptist .Church Young j:Men's Mutual Improvement Society.held their | oi-.eninj? business meeting on Monday evening, | when there was only a moderate attendance. jThi: Rev. A. North presided. The secretary iml treasurer's annual report and balance 'sheet, which showed that the last session had j.beau a prosperous one, and of much benefit j lo those who attended, there being also a credit I balance of cash in hand, were adopted. A splendid syllabus was drawn up, and, if properly carried through, Uc present session bids fair to be one of the i-.Mt that has been heH for many years. Be-, for,? the meeting terminated hearty votes of tli<!nits were accorded to Mr H. Broadhend (editor), and Mr W. R. Smilh (secretary) for service's rendered to tho society during the past' few sessions.
