SCHOOL COMMITTEES' REPORTS.

ARTHUR STREET. Thofamiual report to be submitted to the mooting of householders says: — Again it is the pleasure of the committee to report that the work of the school for tho past year has been of a most satisfactory character.: For some years past the inspectors' annual reports on the work of the school have been most encouraging to tho teachers and gratifying to the committee, and this past year has been no exception. The high position attained by the pupils from the school who presented themselves for the Education Board scholarships is also a matter for congratulation. The attendance still continues to show a steady increase, and since the beginning of this year has warranted the board in giving the school an additional pupil teacher. If this increase continues either we must refuse pupils in some standards or get extra, accommodation. The kindergarten room also shows- an increase in the roll. This the committee expected, as tho character of the teaching is becoming better known in the district. At the end ot tho year Miss White and Mr Cook completed their apprenticeship and left the school, when Misses Liddel and Alexander and Mr E. Lomas were appointed. Miss M'Landress, who had done good work in the school for a number of years, received an appointment in tho North Island, and Miss li. Thomson has been' appointed to the vacancy. : The school picnic was held at Warrington in the beginning of December last, and proved to be1 in every way a success. :' Tlig Bible class conducted by Mr D\ Wright has been held weekly throughout tiie year, and the committee commend this class to the 'parents of the scholars. ' Tho school grounds have been, again considerably improved during the year. .The front of the school, with the .concrete wall, iron fence and gates, now make the exterior appearance of the school more in harmony with the interior. Improvements in the girls' playground have been commenced, and it is the intention of the: committee to asphalt the whole playground as soon-as it has properly settled. • ■ • j ■ In response to the wishes of .a very large majority of parents, tho midday interval has been extended 15 minutes,, so that .the school hours now are from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 1.15 p.m. to 3.15 p.m. The committee would again thank the parents for the ready response they make to every appeal made for assistance.
