NEW PLYMOUTH, April 13.

A! the Supreme Court, Dennis Crowley, charged with carnally knowing, was acquitted, the defence not being called on. Joseph Newman pleaded guilty to1 forgery, and was admitted to probation. Frederick Uilmore, charged, with the forgery of an incomplete order, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. George Sturmey, for uttering counterfeit coin, pleaded guilty, and was admitjjpd to probation. J. L. Lund, stealing a bicycle, got six months. A charge of indecent assault is proceeding.

NAPIER, April 13. A fire broke out shortly before-midnight in a ,shop rented by Captain Widerstroiri;' ship chandler, at Port Ahuriri. The premises were practically gutted, and the whole of the stock, valued at £1600, destroyed. Insurances: On the stock, £1200 (distributed equally amongst the Norwich Union, Zealand1, London and Lancashire, and Standard offices); on the building (owned by Mr W. £300' in the Alliance.1 Captain Wiuerstrom cannot account for the fire. Everything appeared .safe when he left shortly before 10 o'clock last night.

WELLINGTON, April 13. ' A deputation from the Workers' Union who waited on the mayor to-day asked whether the roll for the extended municipal •franchise could not be kept open until the nomination day. His Worship said that the act stipulated that the roll should be compiled on April 14, and the date could not be extended without amending the act. The deputation said the Premier would be -waited on, and asked to make an amendment. '

The South Canterbury Education Board, finding their- expenditure on maintenance outrunning the income, have adopted a scheme of retrenchment to the extent of £600 on the present .outlay, of which £400 comes from the reduction of teachers' salaries and house allowance. Of the saving £300 goes to equalise income and outlay, and.£3oo to pay:a new officer—assistant io the inspector- and secretary.
