CASUALTIES.

(Per United Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, January 23.

Christian Clementson, aged 40, an insurance agent, was drowned yesterday in the Oreti River, near Lumsden. At 4 in the afternoon he was seen to remove his coat and vest and jump into the river. The body was not recovered for half an hour, and all efforts to restore life were ineffectual. The deceased had been drinking. He leaves a wife in Auckland.

The Nelson Colonist reports that the youngest son of Constable Jeffries met with a serious accident while working at the s.s. Mapourika, at Greymoutii, and has been deprived of the sight of one of his eyes through a red-hot rivet piercing it. There is some danger, too, of his losing the sight of the other eye also.
