• AUCKLAND, January 16. j j£igiity-eight Austrians arrived by the Mokoia "from Sydney on Sunday night, and landed quietly, steps having been taken by a customs officer. Sixty go at once to draining work at the Waikato to qualify for the three months' residence required to obtain a license to dig gum. The others are expected to be similarly provided for. A great crowd witnessed the arrival of the steamei, bat the 'Austrians did not go ashore till midnight, when' everything was quiet, and they proceeded to the various boarding houses. These are believed to be the last Austrians who left Dalmatia- before the authorities notified the passage of restrictive legislation. . At an open-air meeting, Mr W. Crowther, 'M H.R., presiding, a resolution was earned to the effect that tie Government be thanked Sot their services in the matter of the prerention of the Austrian influx, and that they be asked to further use their influence to keep Austrians put of New Zealand.
