A NEW CANDIDATE FOR WALLACE.
TO THE EMTOIt,
Sir, —In the Witness of the 3rd. inst. it is ■ stated, on tho authority of the Western Star, that Mr Allan Carmichael, of Otautau, who has hitherto been a .strong Government supporter, and nominator of the late Mr Mackintosh at the last, and, I think', previous. election, is coming out ill the Opposition interest. If true, it will be a piece of audacious political presumption, slnd any candidate of such glaring inconsistency getting any support at all would not be paying a high compliment to any electors supporting him. . It seems as if this move was because there is no prospect of any show against Mr G-il-fedder and the block vote, if coming out as a Government candidate. Poor Wallace has always been inflicted with a plethora of suitors, and been sometimes" strangely represented; and, with the exception of. Dr Hodgkinson, every one has sought to obtain the seat by tho aid of the block vote. There have been somo remarkable incidents connected with the attempts to secure this vote by candidates, the recital of which would show how ridiculously low some people can stoop to obtain the end in view, were it not so morally painful. This last, however, now referred to, if persisted in, would be as great an outrage on the political conscience of Wallace as any hitherto perpetrated.—l am, etc., ■ . , • ■• Inquirer. Invercargill, December 12.
