CANTERBURY v. OTAGp. The match wag continued at Carisbrook yesterday morning in tha presence of a small numbor of spectators. The rain of the prey vious night was not heavy enough to affect tho wicket, and tho ground was in first-class order. The Otago men entered the field shortly after 11 o'clock, two substitutes — Skitch and Geddea—filling tho places of Johnston and Clarko, who were detained at their work in town," and a few mmutes latct I). Keese and Wigloy, the two not-ouv men of Saturday, took up their positions at the wickeU. The visitors hod the enormous task in front of them of compiling'32B runs to pull off a victory, but they proved totally ineupable of accomplishing the desired end, being dismissed for the fiinn.ll total of 77, which left the Otago team victorious by 261 num. Austin's bowling was very destructive, and iiono of the batsmen could stand up betore it very long. Hope was also in good form. His average would havo read much better if two chances of catches off his bowling had. not been missed in the field. On the whole, 'the Olago fielding, was .very.. offoolivo, and Williams gave a display behind the wickets that was in every way creditable to him. It was'his first appearance in these contests, and, that being so, he has all tho more reason to be proud of his performance. Mecsrs 0. Frith and W.. J. Moore acted w the umpires, and throughout the day—as throughout tin; match—they, gave all-round satisfaction. '' . ' - .At a quarter past 11 D. .Reese and Wigley appeared to continue Canterbury's second innings, the latter taking strike from Fisher, whose first ball he cut for 1. Good fielding by Austin provonteel a single from being added to EeeFe's score.: Hope took up the ball at tho south, ond, and his second ball Wigley skied to leg, whoro "Webb showed his worth ' by . holding it securely. 12—2 —1. Sim- ■ partnered Eecsu, and batted the remainder of the over wiihoiK opening his score Beef>o got Fisner anto the j<Up_s for 1. Hope bowled his fifth successive maiden. Sims began hip account, by cutting Fisher twice, a couple icsuiting from'each Htrokq. Hope sent down "another maiden, his record at that stage bring: —8 overs, 6 'maidens. 6 runs, 1 wioket. With a-smart leg lift Reese put 4 on to iiis score "off Fisher, and', ivith -D"on drive added a single off the same bowler. 20 was registered. Reese got under a leg ball from Hopo, and sent it away for c: Sims, with a good sirole, sent Fisher lo leg for 2, and into tho slip*, for a'single—3o up,—aitd Reese got him away tp the off for 1. 'Austin began bowling a*. the south end, in placo of Hope, and trundled a maiden. Hope 'look up the bowling t>i Fisher's end, and his second ball Sims placed nicely to leg for a, qmarlet. £n Austin's nexi over Reese lifted hint into Broad's hands at point. 35—3—18. AY E. Kidley, whose hand ■was almost right 'again; joined Sims at the wickets.' The Jast-naiAed skied Hope to log into Geddoß's hands, but the fielder dropped the ball like a, hot potato. Ridley got Austin away to leg for 4-. At this juncture 25 overs-had been bowled in the second innings . for 39 runs. A single to Him 3, off Hope, sent ,40 up. ' Sims gets 4 off Hope's next' ove.\ I When Uib scoro was .tt 45 Ridley had a " life." | He skied Hope to the on, and Kinvig and t Skiteh ran to catch rit." The formoi called out "All right; le;vve jt," but badly mis- | judged tho ball, and '■ so spoiled what might | otherwise have cost the visitors a wioket. At 46 Sims, who had been, playing very steadily, ' tipped Austin into Williams's hands. I 46— i— 16. Barry stepped out to fill the vacancy, and Bent Austin's last ball away for one. He next tipped Hopo past Williamr lor 3, bringing 50 into s:ghf. Ridley hit Hope to leg for a quartet, and then played the bowler on to his wioket. 54—-s—lo. T. Hee&e was next, aud Ms fourth ball he hit lo , leg, where 'Geddes H«ld it securely;' with a ' smart catch. - 54—6^-0. Austin bowled n maiden. Thiswas lan eleventh over, seven of whicl\ were ■ maidens, and only one run had been Ecored off him. Boxshall cut Hopo for . 2, and sent him to'the off for another. One lo Boxshall off Austin, raised the score to 58, -when the captain skwJ Hope into Kinvig's hands. 58—7-^4. I'httiips, who was Barry's next' partner, cut Hopo for 4, and 60 was signalled. The score mounted slowly, chiefly 'owing to Phjllips's efforts, to 70, and at 73 that player got his d:fmissal at the hands of , Williams, who smartly caughl him behind the wickets. 73—8 —12.- Prankish' made his way out from the pavilion at 10 minutes to I,' and after three' singles had been added the lun- | cheon adjournment, was token. p On resuming ' af 2 o'clock Hopo 6penod the .trundling to Frankish,'and, his fourth ball saw the batsmen given out. lbw.
