The council then proceeded with the ordinary business, the same, members being prosent. ■■:■• accounts; Accounts for the month amounting to £141 14s, were passed for payment . INSrKCTOIi'S BEPcfrITS. The Inspector reported as under: — Maorae's Riding.>— That the roads in this riding were m fair order; but the Hyde bridge was becoming very shaky; and that it was desirable and urgent that the Government jrrant should be paid. J. K. Matheson's road required attention; M. Matheaon's (Mareburn) road wanted a good deal of'Vork done to it ; while I*. Clifford's (Two-mile) road required immediate attention at - the Two-mile Creek.—J. E. Matheson's road and the Mareburn.road were referred to the inspector, with power to act; and with respect 'to Gilford's road the council decided to call for tenders for formation of same. "^
Grqon Valley Riding.—Hugh Frasor's road in this riding required -50 yards of gravsl to put it in order. Tussocirihg 60 chains of M'Donald's road was all that was required for a bridle track, and the tussgeks were not very heavy.—Consideration of the report was deferred until Cr Matheson wan present. Dunback Riding.—A man, had been put on Mr Boll's Mountain track road; but, before calling for tenders ior the work, the inspector required information as to whether a bridle track would be sufficient, or a wheeledtraffic road, as there was not sufficient money in hand to form a vehicle track. The Main road, both in Dunbaek Riding and Green Valley Riding, was becoming very flat and rough, and required gravelling very badly; the Main road from Palmerston to Dunback was in the same condition. Cochrane's paddock, in Bushy Riding, was flooded for want of a culvert under the Factory road.— Referred to the 'inspector. r COEBESrONDENCE. Tho Secretary, Palmerston Race Club, applied for permission to place a small wooden building for a few hours on. the road at the entrance to the racecourse, for the purpose of, selling tickets on Boxing Day.—Granted, subject to the club accepting all responsibility. Mr D. M. Philip, Dunbaek, applied to have the road leading through section 27, block VIII, opened, as it would prove a great convenience to him and to others.—Left in the hands of the chairman and inspector. Mr W. E. Griffin, Macraes, wrote re estimated cost of improving'the township footpaths, pointing out that the council had agreed to form the footpath opposite his premises, provided ho paid half-cost, which he did not consider out. of the way; but, as revenue: had been received from Macraes for so many years, and very little money had been expended in return, he regarded the action of the council as hard in calling upon him to, pay half-cost of the work. He, therefore, asked the council to reconsider their decision, and to carry out the work free of cost to him. Ho pointed out that there were about 5£ chains that required fine gravel, the remainder flags, concrete, or asphalt.—The council decided to adhere £o their former resolution, and that Mr Griffin be informed of the fact.
Mr J. Green, Waitati, wrote expressing his appreciation of the council in having renewed thoir confidence in hiih by him a member of the Charitable Aid and Hospital Boards for the ensuing year.—Received. Mr E. Jones, Wayne's Town, applied for permission to close the end of Avebury street, between sections 3 and \ and the end of Oxford street, between sections 1, 2, 3, block I. —The application was granted, provided that Air Jones erected gates at each end.
The Secretary of the Treasury, Wellington; wrote intimating that the sum of £330, grant' for construction of bridge at'Dunback, had been remitted to the credit of the county fund at the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston.— Received.
The Auditor-general, Wellington, forwarded half-yearly balance sheet, duly certified to.— Received.
The Public Works department, Dunedin, wrote replying to certain complaints made in reference to carrying out the work in connection with the Inch Valley railway, expressing tho opinion that the complaints wero frivol-ous.—-The council passed a resolution to the effect that they considered the complaints of the inspector were justified, seeing that three or four councillors at the time corroborated his statements made to the council. OTHER MATTERS. The council fixed the dog tax for the ensiling year at 2s 6d each dog, and the county office the place of registration. The inspector was instructed to notify contractors that in future on all work connected with existing contracts not finished within the specified time the full penalty under the specificotions would be imposed. Tenders were opened for the following works: —Contract 363, formation of road, Moonlight to Middlemarch, A. Dodds, £26 4b : Baker and Pocldie, £28. The tender of Messrs Baker and Peddie was accepted. The council then adjourned.
