VOLUNTEERS.

On Saturday afternoon the Dunedin Engineers fired the third and final of their series of cup matches. The conditions were seven shots at 200, 600, and 600 yards. The following made over 50 points: — . ■

The cups competed for are the Hallenstein Challenge Cup, presented by Messrs HallenBtein Bros, and Co., ajti.-i also cups presented by. Mr. J. C. Short au<- Mr J. Hislop (jeweler, Princes, street). Tha conditions provide fpr three competitions being fired, the highest aggregates in two to count, and from the subjoined it will be seen that Engineer Whelan becomes the holder of the Hallenstein cup. while Sergeant Eaglo takes Mr Short's and Lance-sergeant Tonkin Mr Hislop's cup for the ensuing year.

The previous holders of the Challenge Cnps are:—Hallenstein cup—lß9l, Lieutenant Barclay, 1895, Engineer Cable; 1896, Lance-cor-poraj Mldgley; 1897, Engineer Power. Mr Short's cup—lß97, Engineer Didham. Mr Hislop'scup—lß94, Engineer Cable; 1895, Engineer Paterson; 1896, Engineer Miles; 1897, Corporal Midgley. ' ; Oa> Saturday afternoon the D.N.A'. fired the second of a series of matches for the company's belt and prizes. The attendance w&s a record one, 87 members competing in the different

classes. The afternoon was a good one for shooting. . A baffling, gusty wind occasionally accounting for a bad score. The following were highest in each class: —
