THE SCHOOL VACATIONS.

HIGH STREET SCHOOL.

The annual distribution oi prizes and break-ing-up ceremony in connection with the High street School took place yesterday afternoon, there being a large numboi of the parents and friends of the children in attendance. Among those present were: Messrs J. H. Hoskiug, W, Farnio, A. Fleming, J. A. Millar, M.H.R., A.. Sligo, M.H.R., M. Cohen, D. Wisharv, and Dr Heinemann. The proceedings commenced in the infant room, where the children, under the direction of Miss Anderson, sang a number of songs and went through some physical exercises.

Dr Brown (chairman .ot the Education Board) presented the prizes and certificates. TKs having been dono, Dr Brown. took advantage of the presence of two members of Parliament (Messrs A. Sligo and J. A. Millar) td call attention to the unsatisfactory nature of the present capitatiou system. He pointed out that capitation being paid on the average attendance, the amount was affected by epidemics, and if there was sickness among the children of a large school it affected not only that school, but the schools throughout Otago, for it was from ihe profit derived from the largo, sohools that the board had to some extant to depend _ for tho carrying on of the smaller schools in the country districts. • An adjournment was then made to the school hall, where the prizes were distributed to the higher classes of the school. Mr J. H. Hosking (ohairman of the school committee) presided. •Mv Sligo moved a vote of thanks to the teacnors, and bpoko a few wordß of advice to the children, the motion being subsequently carried with cheers. '- Mr Smith, head master, briefly acknowledged the vote. '.Mr M. Cohen, in moving a vote oi thanks to the school committee, referred to the necessity of cooking and domestic economy being taught in the board schools. , Throe cheers haying been given ior the Committee, the Chairman wished the children all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year," expressed a hope thai they would all enjoy their holidays, and announced that the Bohool would reopen on February 1.
