SHIPPING SUMMARY.

I Trus summary represents shipping transactions of the period commencing November 21 and ending December 18, both dates inclusive. ■

With tho advent of the wool season comes the increase of shipping business, and wo look naturally for a brisk time to follow. That this will follow may be judged from this month's transactions, which are very satisfactory, and show a liirge • increase ovor last . month's business, while .we must, particularly notice a new brartch.in pur import trade, as set forth by the arrival of steamships direct from the United States. Whether this departure will suit the trade of tho port or not remains to be seen. Two' steamships, however, have already.arrived from tho American port of New York) and tho masters inform us the trade is to bo a permanent one. The improvements to tho upper harbour' are Confidently expected to be materially advanced under the.rcgimo of tho.board's new bnßincc-r and secretary, while that very reC|uiaitb and excellent, institution, the freezing works, at Port Chalmers, is -rapidly pro-feressiug-in usefulness. The works are being materially, enlarged, and,-under.careful management, .'should prove a remunerative affair. Our great staple—wool—is- comingv freely to hand, and the prospect' of the grain season is all that can. be hoped for. .
