A FINE PASSENGER STEAMSHIP.
llio Orient Steam Navigation Company s new boat. Omrah was. launched at Govan on the 'Clj'de, : on Seplernbur ,3. Lloyd's Shipping , Gazette, states that she is a screw steamer, of about'e'Gau tons gross,.and.Bsoo indicated' horsepower. Her" dimensions are: —Length, overall, 510 ft; length, between the perpendiculars, 490 ft; breadth, 56ft 9in; depth, 37ft Gin. She has a straight stem and elliptical stern, and ha 3 fiyo docks, with a 90ft poop, a forecastle ..deckof 70ft,:and a continuous promenade deck ..ofsTstt~lo%:.'^bove the promenade deck, and extending 50ft over the poop, thero is a boat or shelter deck- 180 ft long, on which provision is made for the boats—lG in,number., rThe^ship has been'built to meet the requirements of the Board of Trade for passenger certificate, and also under special survey and with scantlings as required by. Lloyd's latest rule? for the 100 Al class.. There is a cellular double bottom tho.full length of tho ship, and the holds are sub-divided into separate compartments by water-tight bulkheads, which are arranged and constructed to meet the requirements of the Bulkhead Committee, with a strong collision bulkhead forward. The holds, are so subdivided that even if two of the compartments of the largest size are filled with water the vessel will have sufficient surplus buoyancy to keep afloat.. She is also fully equipped for emplOy.ment as an armed cruiser, and her name^will be placed on the Admiralty List for that purpose. Sho has one large funnel, with two derrick pole masts, with fore and aft sails. It is intended she shall carry about 350 first and second class passengers on the main and spar decks, with 500 steerage on the lower deck. The cabin accommodation is most complete, the state rooms being fitted for two, three, and four persons. In several of the cabins tho lower berths are fitted to draw out and make double berths. The propelling machinery will consist of two sets of triple expansion engines, each set having three cylinders—high pressure, low pressure, and medium,—with three cranks.
