DISCOVERY OF A BODY AT THE HEADS.

NOT YET IDENTIFIED,

The body of a man, whose name is unknown, was found, partly buried, on tho beach at the north head at 2.30 on the 16th inst. by Mr W. Sutherland while walking on the beach. Tho body was removed by the police to the morgue at Port Chalmers, where it awaited identification. There were no marks of violence on the body, and tho man i 3 supposed to have been drowned. The body was that of a man about 45 years of age. He was of stout build, and sft 7in or sft Bin in height. He had round features, and was clean shaved, with the exception of a dark-brown moustache. He had dark-brown hair, slightly tinged with grey, and was bald on the top of the head. He was clad in a pair of tweed trousers and a vest of the same material, both garments being much woni. He also wore a light coloured cotton shirt, with the words "J. Muir and Co., hosiers, Princes street, Dunedin," on the neck band; likewise a linen collar (size 15^), a brown singlet, and a pair of boots (size 8), half-soled, the left boot having a small patch on the upper. A largo number of persons visited tho morgue at Port Chalmers on the 7th with a view to the identification of the body found partially embedded in the sand at the North Head. It was thought possible from deceased's dress, and the fact that he had a bunch of small keys in the hip pocket.of his trousers, that he might have been an assistant steward on board of one of the Home steamers, but although several of the storekeepers and butchers who do business with tho shipping visited the morgue they were unable to identify the body, and it is now surmised that the man may have fallen overboard from some vessel when passing tho heads.
