SHIPPING SUMMARY.
This summary represents shipping events of the period commencing September 26th and endfcg October 23rd, doth days inclusive. STATISTICAL, FOBEIGN, ETC. At this season of the year shipping matters arc-generally dull, and the present is no exception to the rule. The number of arrivals during the month has been 38 vessels, with a total of 57,895 tons register, and tho dopajturos 34- vessels, registering 51,650 tons Against 4-1 vessels which arrived laet month with 61,768 tons, and 4-1 vessels which left with 55,845 tons register. The number of vessels which have arrived ?t the port of Otago during tho month from overseas has been six, with a total of. 19,066 tons register, against five vessels with 21,4-39 tons last month. .The departures this month have been four vessels' of 18,871 tons register, as against, three last nionth with a total of 15,200 tons register. ■ The first arrival from overseas this month was that of the.s.s. Duke of Devonshire, of 3527 tons, Captain Long, from London, via northern ports, which arrived at Port Chalmers on September 28th to complete loading for London. The Norwegian barque Liv, of 810 tons, Captain Farup, from Hamburg, came into port on October Bth with 1350 tons of cargo, after a fair passage of 117 days from port to port The R.M.S. Gothic, Captain W. H. Kidley, K.N.R., from London, via northern ports, arrived at Port Chalmers on October Bth to take in southern cargo for London. The Nova Scotian ship Norwood, of 1597 tons, Captain Boy, from New York, via Lyttelton, arrived on October 17th, and was followed on that day by the barque Akarod,- of 1298 tons, Captain Murray, from Liverpool, via Wellington: while the list of oversea arrivals was completed on October 19th by the arrival of tho New Zealand Shipping Company's steamship Waimate, of 3659 tons, Captain R. Jaggard, :>(tcr a good passage of 38 days from London, and bringing 4454- tons of general cargo, the greater portion of which was for this port. The British-India Company's s.s. Onda, of 514-7 tons, Captain Wilson, K.N.R., left Port Chalmers on .September 29th for Calcutta, via Newcastle. The Union Steam Ship Company s s.s, Wanaka, of 2422 tons, Captain Smith, left Port Chalmors on the same clay for Calcutta, via intermediate ports The New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Duke of of 3527 toii3, Captain Long, loft Port Chalmers on October Ist, for London, with a full general cargo and several passengers. The R.M.S. Gothic, of 7775 tons, Lieutenant W. H. Kidley, R.N.R., left Port Chalmers on Ootober 12th for London, via Wellington. Her cargo from this port consisted of 7047 carcases frozen mutton, 1902 crates frozen rabbits, 152 casks tallow, 16 do pelts, 222 bales wool, 184- do rabbitskins, 12 do basils, 10 do leathor, 3 do horsehair, 50. bags quartz, 350 sacks oats, 277 do grass seed, 100 drums glycerine, and 3 cases sundries. KJTBBOOLONIAL. ' A fair amount of shipping business has been transacted this month between the port of Otago and those of the Australian colonies. The arrivals this month have been 14- vessels, with a total 0f'30,982 tons registor, and the departures seven vessels, with 18,128 tons. Last month the arrivals wero 12 vessels, registering 29,174 tons, and the departures 12 vessels, with a total of 27,707 tons rogister. COASTAL. The trade between this port and thoco along the seaboard of the colony has boon slack during tho month. The arrivals of vessels of all classes has been 18, representing 7817 tons register, and the departures 23 vessels, with a total of 14,651 tons. Last month we had 24- arrivals, with 11,155 tons, and 26 departures with 12,938 tons reB'ster> i . ' ™,™~
