THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The Dunedin Horticultural Society's prize schedule for tho forthcoming season is now available, and should be perused by those who have a liking for flowers and desire to competo in some of the various classes. The total prize mon»y in cash and kind offered for tho season is about £275, which is an increase of about £17. Of course the intrinsic value of the prizes counts for little; it is the honour of gaining them -which 'is' sought. A special prize for gardeners only is one of the features of the Spring siiow. Tbere will be a chempion competirioj in roses at the December show, and there is offered a- challenge- trophy" for ladies, which is i.ow 'on view at Mr Frank Hyams's. The romtnittee are very ■ desirous of more competition in the cottage garden class, and it is hoped some of our mechanics and tradesmen who devote their apare time to floriculture will make a point of competing. There are prizes offered to children for pot plant's grown by themselves, and. care will bo taken that in this the plants compeliiig are not bought for the children a few weeks before the show. This will give even the poorest child an equal chance. For the May i'-how a number of specials are offered by the Chri-santhemurn Club and friends. In this connection an error may be pointed out in the particulars of tho group of chrysanthemums staged for effect. U'Jio word " plants " is left cut, and it should read " foliage plants not to be debarred." At the Autumn show a prize is offered for the best 'window plant.. Window gardening can be carried on anywhere, and. there should be keen competition. At this show the children of the Industrial School will be asked to compete from their own special plots, the girls with cut flowers and the boys with vegetables. Enough' has been said about the schedule to show that the Horticultural Society; is on the alert, and if encouraged as it should be each show will doubtless mark an advance on the ona preceding.'
