(Pep. United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, August 24. Arthuv Allen was convicted at the Police Court on a charge ot breaking two panes of glass worth 40s at William Earle's restaurant. Mr Earle said this was the third time Allen had broken his window. He had received a letter a fortnight ago from accused, in which the latter said : " I cannot possibly help myself when in drink. It'will pay you to help me to leave Auckland. You can arrange a passage for me to Sydney or Wellington—Sydney preferred. I am sure you will never regret it." The bench pointed out that Allen had been convicted on similar charges at Christchurch and Dunedm. He was sentenced to three months' hard labour. He is said to be well connected in England. T.hree labourers employed on the New Plymouth breakwater went out fishing yesterday and were blown out to sea by the south-east gale. They were picked up in an exhausted state 14 miles off the land by the Glenelg, and taken by her to Onehunga. NEW PLYMOUTH,, August 24 Since the abandonment of the last petroleum bore a plant has been re-erected half a mile away, and boring was commenced on Tuesday. Unless, however, the Government give assistance it is feared that sinking to the depth where the oil was previously met with is out of the question. Mr M'Kay, the Government geologist, is here to examine • -and report on the operations. At a special meeting of the Mount Egmont Lodge, No. 670, E.G., to-night, the members, by a vote of-24 to 5, decided to remain in allegiance to the Grand Lodge af England. WELLINGTON, Au fl usi 24. ■ George Coleman, who is accused of numerous swindles by means of forged cheques for large amounts, was arrested at Westpoi't yesterday. He had disguised himself, bat his height betrayed him. He evaded tie police here very cleverly by taking a railway ticket, going part of the distance to Palmer"»ton, and then returning here. A mysterious robbery occurred this afternoon at the premises' of Semelofi Bros., pawnbrokers, Cuba street, when £200 worth of jewellery was stolen from the shop window between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Itwas a half holiday, and the brothers left at 4 o'clock". There were no shutters on the windows. It appears as if the robbery was the work of clever criminals, and it is suggested they may have got away with tin plunder by the Tarawera, which left foi Sydney at 5 o'clock. . ■ George Goss, 29 years of age, who was admitted to the lunatic asylum yesterday, diec suddenly this afternoon.
