«. .. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. . SYDNEY, August 23. (Received Aug. 23, at 10.55 a.m.) Mr Byrnes, the Premier of Queensland, was entertained at a picnic yesterday. Referring to the growing federal spirit in Queensland and. the probability of that colony entering the union,.he said he thought that the federal idea grew out of the usurpation of part of New Guinea. He believed that the departure from a continental policy and the Various issues raised between the Home Office and the colonies called attention to the necessity for some central authority able to decide the question of an extraAustralian character and of Australian import. An official message has' been despatched by the Premiers' Conference to the. Governor of Queensland, in which. it is stated that until the question of the proposed. concessions has been decided the Premiers are unable to arrive at a definite decision with regard to the future administration of New Guinea.
