The Talune's departure for Sydney has been postponed till tomorrow. »' SHORT OF PROVISIONS. NELSON, August 12.—The barquentine Jasper, Captain Burton, from Lady Elliott Island to Dunedin with a cargo of guano, put inhere this afternoon short of provisions. She left the island six weeks ago, and encountered very bad weather after sighting the Solanders, and was unable to get through Foveaux Strait, so she had to come up the West Coast. She has sustained no damage whatever, and the captain having obtained provisions, will sail in the morning if the wind is favourable. The s.s. Kini, from Timaru, arrived at 1 o'clock p.m. yesterday, and, after discharging 690 casks of tallow for the John o' Gaunt, left again at 5 p.m. for Westport direct. The a.s. Corinna sailed for Westport, via way ports, at 4 p.m. yesterday. The barque John o' Gaunt was ballasting aud re-stowing cargo yesterday. The barquentine Ocertn Ranger will probably sail for Greymouth to-day. The Government steamer Tutanekai, which arrived at Wellington on Thursday, will be placed on the patent slip for cleaning and painting. On being launched she loads railway iron for Nelson, continuing cv to Greymouth to fill up with coal for Onehunga and Kaipara. At the latter port she loads sleeper 3 for Dunedin. :The Hinemoa, which is on her return trip from tho outlying islands, goes to Westport to - load sleepers for Dunedin, returning from here to Wellington. The Compagnie Messageries Maritimes, whose fine steamers Polynesian, Armand Behic, Australien, and Ville de la Ciotat are such favouritas on the Australian line, has just held its annual meoting. The company pays a dividend ol 5 per cent, this year, as compared with 5 pei cent, for 1896, 6 per cent, for 1895, and 5 per cent, for the two previous years. The revenue account, including the small balance carried forward from the previous year, shows the receipts to have been 61,808,645fr, against 61,238,328fr in 1896. During the year the company sold the Nerthe, built' in 1874, and acquired in 18S8, and at the end of the year 1898 five steamers were building, four at the company's works at La Ciotat,'and the fifth at La Seyne. Since the report was issued the Arethusa aud the Amazone have been sold. The Alphee is also to be got rid of. At the meeting of tho company a dividend of 25fr per share of 500fr was declared, and.'the council of administration was authorised to borrow 15,000,000fr on S_ per cent, debentures as required, payable after April 1, 190 G. H.M.S. Amphitrite wer to be launched from the yards of Messrs Vic-kers, Son, and Maxim. at Barrow, early in July. She is a first-class protected cruiser, of 11,000 tons and 1800 indicated horse-power; hoi dimensions beingLength between the perpendiculars, 435 ft; breadth extreme, 69ft; mean draught, 25ft 3in. Her speed will be 21 knots, and the armament | will consist of 16 6in quick-firing guns, 11 ; 12-pounder quick-firing guns, 8 machine guns, and 2 torpedo tubes—altogether a formidable armament. It is almost superfluous to point out the good work that has been done, and is beiug don,?, by the Mercantile Marine Officers' training ships Worcester and Conway. The report of the latter for 1897, which has recently been issued, contains some interesting statistics. We learn that 68 cadets joined the ship, while 80 left, the average number borne on the books during the year being 134. The Powerful and Ter- ! rible must, we fear, be written down failures. i *- THE MAPOURIKA. 1 The nevv steamer Mapourika, for the Wel--1 hngton-West Coast trade, was launched by j Messrs W. Denny and Sons from their yards ' at Dumbarton on Juno 29. She is 220 ft long, ; 35ft broad, and has a depth of 16ft 6in. She i has a straight stem and elliptical stern, a ' promenade deck, and topgallant forecastle, and J is schooner rigged, with double bottom and Ith 3 usual watertight bulkheads. There are ■ three cargo hitches with ateam winches and I double derricks, the after winch having ex--1 tended ends for warping the ship and raising j the boats. While having a large dead weight capacity, the Mapourika- has accommodation for 150 first-class and 34 second-class passengers. Tho dining-room is amidships, extends the full breadth of the ship, and is finished in sycamore and satin woods, relieved -with pilasters and frieze in cameo wood. The cushions are' upholstered in Utrecht velvet, and the general fittings are such as we are accustomed to see in all the company's later steamers. The whole ship is brilliantly lighted with electricity, and there are electric fan ven-tilators-in the passengers' quarters.
