Of all Medicine Vendors throughout the World ROAD BOARDS. ■ » The regular meeting of the Tomahawk Road Board, held on Monday, was attended by Messrs SmaiLL, Mathieson, Patrick, Henderson, Cowen, and Miller. Mr A. Smaill was elected chairman, Mr J. Mathieson treasurer, and Mr T. Henderson to countersign cheques. It was resolved that the culvert on Main road bo repaired with stones, and marram grass^plantcd at Laing's Hill. Mr Stewart wrote drawing attention to the dangerous position of a bridge on ths Valley road. It was decided to attend to bhe work at once. It was resolved that four acres of sandhills adjoining the new road be planted with marram grass, and to be scrubbed where required; also, to lifb and clean the cuiverts on the new road, culverts to be replaced 6ia from the surface. Tenders were accepted as follows >: —For metal for Valley road, and Centra road, Andrew Brown; for Cowen's road, R. Wright. The clerk was inattracted to give the necessary notice of the board'B intention to strike a rate of 'f d in the j pound on the rateable value of a'l rateable property within the Tomahawk district for tho year ending 31st March, 1899. Accounts were passed for payments for £516s 6d. The regular monthly meeting of the Peninsula Rood Board wks held at the board's office, Highcliff, on Satnrday, and was attanded by Messrs Stuart (chairman), Fairbairn, M'Curdy, Howe, Murray, and Robertson. The Chairman reported that the dead was now ready for the conveyance of roads in Bayfield estate from Mr Bggg to the Peninsula Road Board. Ifc wai resolved that the minute of last meeting be rescinded re price of breaking metal, and the following be subitituted ;—" That the price of breaking blue stono metal be 2» per yard, including this day's payment." The member for Anderson's Bay reported that the culvert at Anderson's Bay had been attended to. It was decided to procure four bushels of poisoned grain. ~Mr Rutherford wss present, and showed a sketch of a road required leading to his property at Sandymount. Is was resolved that the matter stand over for the consideration of the new board. The clerk was instructed to give the necessary notice of the board's intention to strike at next meeting a general rate of ifd in the pound on the rateable value of all rateable j property within thti Peninsula Road District for | the year ending 31st March, 1899. Mr M'Kay lodged a protest as he wsb not allowed to take his seat on the board as a. new member. The board ruled that the board was not constituted ■ till after the present election for the Highcliff J subdivision. Account! were passed for payment for £112 139 9d. The annual meeting of the Porbobello Road Board was held on Saturday, eight ratepayers being present. Mr W. Dicksou was in the chair. The clerk submitted a copy of the balance sheet for the year ending 31st March, 1898. Those present thought it very satisfactory, seeing the amount of work executed during the past 12 months. The Chairman thanked them on bahalf of the board, remarking that he could not but oompliraent the clerk, collector, and inspector of works on the efficient manner they carried out their duties. Their salaries put together did not exceed 5 per cent, on the expenditure. No other local body in the colony was worked 80 economically ss the Portobello Road Board. He said this fearless of contradiction. Under those circumstances he had great pleasure on behalf of the board in thanking the staff for the efficient manner they had carried ont their duties individually. The ordinary adjourned meeting was then proceeded with, the members present being Messrs Dickson, Hinkley, North, Seaton, Milne, Macandrew, Geary, and Raynbird. Mr Macandrew proposed, and Mr Raynbird seconded—That Mr Wm. Dickson be chairman." This was carried unanimously. Mr Dickaon thanked the members for the honourable position they had placed him in. He would do in the future as he had done in the past, and the honour just conferred was to his mind out of place, as other gentlemen in the board were as worthy of the position as himßelf, and more so. However, as he was the man of their choice he would accept it. The Returning Officer reported the result of the polling held at Broad Bay and Portobello.
