DUNEDIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
Tho monthly meeting of ;the Chamber of Commerce Committee waa held yesterday, and attended by Messrs G. L. Deunisfcoa (president), John Moloney, P. R, Sargoad, T. R. lusher, W. B. Raynolds, and A. C. Begg.
A letter wan read from the Secretary of the' "Greater Britain" Exhibition, to be held at E»\rle1 s Court, London, from May to October, 1899, forwarding a. prospectus and particulars of the proposal, and it was decided to ask the Government to give its support to the soheme, a3 one likely to bo of benefit to the colony. The Sub-committee ou Bills of Ludingreported that they had carefully considered the mnasure entitled " The' Carriage by Water Act," proposed by tns Sydney Chamber, with a view ".to extend the remedies of persons suffering loss by damage to goods, or loss of goods, carried by ssa," and approved of the principles embodied therein.—lt was resolved to a*k'tha i other chambers in thn colony to co-operato in requesting the Government to introduce similar legislaiion in New Zealand;
It was also resolved that the Government be respectfully asked to have published more promptly the quarterly and anunal returns of customs, exports and imporos, as great inconvenience is experienced by the public through the delay which at present exists. The committee, having noticed the discussion in the Harbour Board, re the motion of Mr Begg, aB to the charges on esports of frozen meat, and being satisfied that the high rafce militates against the success nf. the trade, resolved to inform the Harbour Board that they trust that before long they will see their way to reduce' the export rate.
Chakge ' Against an Administratrix.— Catherine Walker was charged that being the duly appointed administratrix of the eatate of John Walker, late of Dunedin, hotelkeepev, who died on or about thn Bth November, 1897. she failed to maintain Klleu Mary Regan, a female illegitimate child under 14 years, of which child John Walker was the father, and his estate being sufficient to enable the administratrix to maintain tbe child. —Mr Wilkinson appeared to prosecute, aud Mr Woodhouse to defend.—The case waR brought under " The Destitute Persons Act, 1894," and was a claim upon the administratrix of the late John "Walker for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. The mother of the child—a Miss Regan—went to Lawrence 10 years ago, when the child was bora, «nd she (the mother) shortly afterwards died. The sum of 12s a week was paid by John Walkertill November last, when he died. Application yvas now made that the payments he continued till the child was 14, or that an equivalent lump sum be paid down.—After evidence, the case was adjourned for a week.
■ Assault.—George Metcalfe was charged with assaulting JSliza Metcalfe at St. Kilda on the 29th April.—Mr Gallaway appeared for complainant, and Mr Hanlon for defendant, who pleaded not guilty.—Mr Gallaway said' that defendant not only assaulted his wife on the 29th, but on several subsequent day?. There was another summons against the defendant for disobedience of an order. —After evidence defendant was fined 40s and costs. George Metcalfe was also charged with disobeying an order for the maintenance of his wife Eliza Metcalfe.—The case was adjourned for a week in order to allow the parties to some to some arrangement.
