THE CLYDE DREDGING COMPANY'S i ■" ■■- DREDGE. The Clyde Dredging Company's dredge'Moa is now upon payable gold again after a spell of about three months, during which time she was laid up for alterations and repairs. The dredge was kept running almost continuously during the winter to ■ take advantage of the Io?/ state of the river when little drift was travelling, consequently the machinery got very much out of repair, and the bull being of weak construction it had twisted and thrown the machinery very much out of line. Wtn-n the river rose the dredge was laid up, and Messrs Cutten Bros M the company's consulting engineers, made a thorough examination of the dredge, and at their suggestion it was decided to thoroughly overhaul and rearrange the machinery and pliica it so that the weight would be bcttcc i distributed noon the pontoons. Plans wetepre- | pared'by the liim mentioned, and the alterations j have been very ably carried out hy Mr W. [ M'Callum and the company's dretlgemaater and ! engineer. The tumbler frame has been riised to | improve the delivery of the dirt, the hull has ! been strengthened all through,"aud more especially ! under the engines, boiler, and winches, ' the gantry frame has been braced, the boiler has been shifted from the side .of the well to the outside of the pontoon and covered with asbestos lovei-ingy governors.have been fitted t» the engines, and the whole of rite gearing has been shifted irom the one side of the dredge to the other. Sbifl pinio«B have been fitted to the winches and the elevator-. has been overhauled, and the arrangemenr for ; driving it altered and made stronger and much i more convenient for repair. The effect of the

foregoing alterations has been to greatly stiffen the hull, wEich" now sitsleveT "on Ehi water. The machinery runs much more evenly and smoothly, and the boiler, which under the, previous coil- i ditions was apparently too small, is now steaming I without difficulty ajid upon a greatly reduced consumption of fuel.
