THE ARREST OF DEL ORPEN.

By the R.M.S'ateamor Alaineds, from S»n Francisco to-dayjpatticulars are to handof the arrest of Dr Arthur Herbert Orpen, of Auckland/ on Jahnary' 19, on the charge of the murder of the girl M'Gallum. :;\ _ The following; under the heading of " The Law After Arthur Orpeh," is from the San iracciaoo Chronicle of January 20 :—" That the arm of the law is long was proved aeain when Dc Arthur Herbert Orpeu was taken yesterday from the steamship Australia. He sailed from Auckland in the Alameda la&t ChTistmag night. A few hourg before that busan Harriet Campbell M'Callum died from' tne result of a criminal operation. The New Zealand police allege that Dc Orpcn caused her death. A warrant ; charging him with murder was Bworn out, and when it was found that he toad sailed a description of the man, with & brief statement of the crime "with which he was cbargea, wa3 cabled to Consul-general Warburton at this port, who swore out a warrant for Orpen's arrest. The Uuited^States marshal, IJ. Wln< has bf*n watching every steamship which has arrived since the warrant was | placed in his handg."
Orpenleft the Alameda at Honolulu, and it was thought he might come on in the Peru, but he diduot. His name was on the list of s'eerage passengers on the Australia. He was sent tor as soop as the ship got to the dock The warrant wa* read to him and he was put under arrest. He seemed somewhat surprised, and was visibly nervous. He said it was a mistake He expected he would be taken hack to New Zealand, aud said he was sure he would be able to make it clear that it was a mistake n-ißoner is a thin, nervous man of about 55 years, though his grey hair and whiskers acd a utoop in his shoulders give him the appearance of. being older. He is well formed, has small blue 'eyes, and a very inoffensive, appearance, and does not strike one as having the air of a- medical practitioner. He wore a greyslouch hat, a pea jacket trimmedat .the collar and. cuffs,, with chinchilla light trousers, which he turns up at the bottom. He claims England as his birthplace. As soon as his baggage was passed by the customs officers Dr Orpeu was taken to the marshal's office and soon afterwards before Judge Morrow, who issued the warrant here. He was identified, acknowledged that his true name was Orpen, aud was remanded to the custody of the marshal. No date was get for his hearing, and it will be impossible to have a final hearing on tbe extradition uatil the documentary evidence comes from New Zealand. Dr Orpen was taken to the comity gacl. He refused to discuss himself or the charge upon which he is held.
