' ' ' Wans'anul, February 2*. A_ fire broke out in the Maeoiiic Hotel to-night, bub was fortunately suppressed before much damage was done. The fire originated in a servant's bedroom, the contents of which were destroyed. The building in insured in the Commercial Union office for £600, and the furniture in ths same tor £300.
Wellington, February 24-. Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, who retires from the editorship of the New Zealand Times, was the recipient of a valuable testimony of his services to the paper when the directors met a'day or no ago. In order to mark their appreciation of tbe work done by him, a bonus of 120 guineas was voted to him.
The Government will send Home one or more artillery cadets for training. Thesnm of £7600 has been approved by the Cabinet as a final payment to thejoeal bodies in the Hawke's Bay district for the repairs of flood damage.
The Government have appropriated £3000 for the continuation of the Otago Central line.
The City Council to-night decided to secure an engineer at a salary of £800 with a three year* engagement. • Mr Wiltshire, the present engineer, is to be retained to supervise the inside work.
