EXHIBITION OF ART STUDENTS.

j . ." ,'. — —+-. —- ---j Au exhibition of work hy Miss Grace Joel's » students was held at her studio in Liverpool | street yesterday afternoon. The work is numer--1 ous, and the general quality of ifc may be des- | cribed as excellent. Tho.se who visited last year's i exhibition will be enabled to notice a distinct | advance in the efforts of the students. The head j of an old man by J. G. Rollo Fisher will be recogi nised as full of character. It appears to have, v j ruddy giow. which is evidently due to the reflecI tion from the red background. The pastel under-' • neath hy the same student is delicate iv colour j and suggestive in treatment, as i« also the still ; life of vegetables, which is vigorously and realistically painted. Another stiU life painting is by J. Shaw. It is strongly drawn iv a harmonious scheme of colour. Tbis student bas also a number of charcoal drawings from life. One head is particularly deserving of praise, being remarkably well drawn and full of spirit. Mr Shaw has also an interesting and happily conceived caricature illustrative of an Irishman's ready wit, and indicative of the direction in which the student's talent is likely to lead him. A halflength nude and several heads by B. M. Sinclaii are well drawn: Some studies of wallflowers and daisies by J. Torrance are artistically painted, being rich in colour and good in composition. Antique heads by K. Fells aud G. S. Thomson show decision and character; while amongst the remaining work are examples of still life studiei of the character required by the still life department of the South Kensington Department oi Science and Art, and interesting on tnat account while there hre also specimens of landscape paint ing which show that the students have made ; 1' good start in this branch of study. Altogethe: the exhibition is interesting as showing tin results ef sound training under au euthusiastii ,' teacher. ! , = i A BIG BOOM. The boomir.sr of the cannon i j nothing to the boom of DERBY tobacco.
