The near approach of the Midsummer meeting of .the Canterbury Jockey Clnb is cuisina the doings on the. tminißg track at Riccarfeon to liven up somewhat;, and the vurious local teamn are getting in more solid . work than usual. Culverin, Haria,: Skirmisher, Starshot, and Bloomer ha,ve been doing longish work evidently in view of competing in the Midsummer Handicap, and.Epaulet, Goldleaf, and Ksngennder are being sent along. Altogether the nine candidates at headquarters are lookine very wall, and the best of these, with the visitora^from Dunedin.will make up a decent Held. There is every prospect of a. most interesting meeting next week. The competitors in the two-yosr-old and classic events are the best in training, andlhe fields are likely to be quite up to the average.-
