"THE SIGN OF THE CROSS."

The matinee of "Th. Sign of the Cross" yesterday aftemoor. attracted an appreciative audience. In response to the invitation of the management a number of clergymen, attended, among them being the Yen. Archdeacon Gould, the Keys J. Waters, 11. Brooke, J. C. Small, Canon Luca?; F. 0. Platts, W. W. Lowe, W. IT. Browne, anil P. Mayne. The performance was carried through with the same completeness and artistic effect as at night, «nd it was witnessed with marked interest.' In "the evening there was another house that crammed the theatre. That there should he crowded, houses to witness this stirring and, magnificent play is to bo expected, hut that the^e large audiences should consist, in great j.art, of people who,do not ordinarily frequent theatres, and of people whose religious -criiple..- forbid -hnir witnessing dramas, is Significant. Notwithstanding the fact that a matinee had beeu given, tbe ladies and gentlemen who have to bear the "brunt of the dialogue and acting showed no signs of fatieue. It is admitted by all clas.ns of tin: communi-v that a finer, more lmnressive, anil better spectacular play has never been staged in Dunediu. Of the splendour of the scenery, the magnificence of the appointments, and the superh finish which is given to the scene, mention has already been made, while the simple and utiii-eefc.d story which runs throughout the drama can hardly fail to move tbe playgoer. The management has made some special arrangements by which residents in the ountry will be able to see the play. A special train will run from Invercargill ou Friday night, and residents of Oamaru and intermediate stations can travel to town on Friday by any train, their tickets being available for return the same night by special train leaving Dunedin at 10.40 p.m., after the performance. ______
