CITY TAXATION.
TO THE EDITOR,
j Sir, —The question has often been asked, " Why should the city not make a profit out of its water and gas ? :I and hitherto I have not been able to see any reason against it. On looking at my account I have altered my opinion, and in the hope that the same reasons which have influenced me may affect others and procure reform of our taxation system, I j am troubling you with the following figures :— lam rated at"£100 » year. I paid last year £10 for water and £20 for gas. Assuming that I am overcharged 25 per cent, (and I am assnred this ia rather under the mark), I pay £7 10s in indirect taxation, or at the rate of Is 6d in the pound. I and others are paying some other people's taxation. I presume the owners of small properties, who pay rates while their tenants ps.y gas and water, get the benefit of lower rates, but that surely was not what the city became owner of its own gas and water supply for. —I am, &c, Dunedin, November 8.
