_~ . ~',', t«*«ies. February 19. Ihere is a considerable revival in mining in the Ibames district. The Thames-Hauraki deep level shaft has been sunk, timbered, and centred 400 ft Mr Hughes, an English engineer, has arrived to take coarse. Interviewed, he expressed the opinion that gold exists iv the deep levels. He had gained experience of deeo level mining in the Lomstock mine, Nevada, and in Cornwall in the Ualcoath mine. In the Upper Thames mine 3 a revival is expected in the beginning of March. Ifc is reported that Mr Lucas, of the Miners' Union, Thames, will probably be the new mining inspector vice Mr Gow.

There is considerable" dissatisfaction at the action of the Government in stopping prospecting in the Uriwera country. Mr Laing Cruickshank, of London, is offering a reward through his attorney of £100 for a payable reef. The compauy he represents floated Rhodesia for Mr Cecil Rhodes The offer is considered reliable by ihining men here. \

February 15.—There has been little or no alteration in mining matters during the past two weeks. Just enough rain has fallen to keep the supply of water up. The Golden Rise has just sufficient water to keep them working 12 hours a day.' .Their dam is very low.

Tbe prospectus 'aPPears ih another column of the Hartley and Riley Beach Dredging Company J™ ca Pltal is to be £5000 (in £1 shares), of which 4800 are offered to the public. It is proposed to place a dredge on the river to work that portion of the famous beach from which Hartley and Riley obtained such a large quantity of gold in the early* days of mining.
