WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES

(From Ouk Own Correspondent.)

Wellington, February 19, THE MEETING OF PARLIAMENT.

It was rumoured this morning thafc Parliament would assemble ou the 18fch March. I made some inquiry and discovered thafc no notice had been received on the subjecfc from the Government, but something that I know nothing of. appears to have given a sort of fillip to political intelligence. It may be a consequence ot the relief from the worry of the recent election petitions. As fche election petitions have ceased to preoccupy the public mindpeople turn naturally to the prospect of an " early session " and what it may bring forth. It hag become, known in some way thafc the members of the Hansard stafi have received " warning" thattheir attendance willberequired afc an early date. Why there should be any mystery about the matter it is difficult to understand. The Opposition leaders are prepared to give every facility so that the Premier may be able to represent the colony in London, but there are members of the party who insist thafc the Premier should explain the financial position of the colony before he goes away. .The responsibility of any failure in this respect will rest upon him. The signs of preparation for the session are beginning to appear: workmen are engaged within the building and the foundations are being laid for the Ballance monument in the Parliament ground*, opposite the carriage drive.

WELLINGTON SUBURBS. Ifc is stated that the Government; are likely to have some trouble iv respect to the candidate for this seat, which has been declared vacant. Mr Charles Wilsou has been regarded as the most acceptable to fche Goverument, because in his recent canvaas of the Wellington City he was regarded as a "strong" man. But Mr Kirk (the mayor of Petone) is regarded as a "strong", man too, and so when Greek meets Greek," &c. It is said that a meeting of the supporters of the Government will be held on Monday to decide which is the more " sound on the goose."
