Translated from the German by John Houghton This Book is a history of the life and work of the Rev. J. F. 11. Wiihlers, Missionary at Ruapuke, written by himself—the original work having been published in Bremen in ISS3. I Coming to New Zealand in 1543, he established himself as a missionary amongst the I Maoris at Ruapuke. He converted communities (to use his owu words) of loathsome savages, sunk in poverty and degradation, into communities of prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many years no remuneration whilst so doing, but producing his own food out of the soil, and teaching the Maoris to do the same after a civilised manner; thu3 saving people's souls and tbeir bodies as well. He preserved and fully records the old Maori mythology (a sublime oue), the custodians of which all died before his own demise. His Book i 3 a valuable record of the early history of New Zealand, and is written with great literary taste and poetic and pious feeling, j Can be- ordered from Booksellers, i Price : I Bound in Cloth, 3s 6d,
