Auckland, February 8. At a meeting of the Auckland Trades and , Labour Council Mr W. G. B. Fraser, engineer, •was elected president. The chief business of the meeting waß to confer respecting the reception of Mr Ben Tillett, and it was resolved that a reception committee be formed. The Hon. . W. Jennings, who was present, stated that on j hii return to Wellington on Monday he would j wire to ths secretary of the Trades and Labour .. Council any information he could possibly ; acquire in reference to Mr Tillett's movements. Consideration of a letter from the Dunedin United Furniture Trades Union was held over iill next meeting. Wellington, February 8. A deputation of seamen waited oa the ilinister for Marine and complained of the practice of engaging incompetent seamen, and listed that a shipping master should be s.ppointed at each port to supervise the matter Hid see that the regulations were enforced. rlhe Minister promised to lay the matter before the Cabinet. THE MAKINE ENGINEERS' WAGES. \ The Post gives the following as the text of I the letter, dated January 25, from the managing ! director of the Union Steam Ship Company to ' the secretary of the Institute of Marine Engi- | neers with respect to a new schedule of rate of i wages paid to the engineers in the company's ■ employ:— ; Dear Sir,—l have now the pleasure to place on i record the arrangements that have been concluded \ as the result of the interview bstweeo myself ! and the deputation of the Institute of Marine ' Engineers, comprising yourself, Messrs Signal, i Dalrymple, and Baird. Pvates of pay to be as : follows:— i
■_ The rates of pay for third and fourth engineers in the schedule to apply only to those third and fourth engineers who have been one year and over in tho,service of the company, and all those appointed after this date to be paid as follows :— i£ird engineer, £12 per month first 12 months, £13 second 12 mouthy £H third and successive years; fourth engineer, j£!o per month first 12 months, .£ll second and successive years. Third engineers appointed during the last 12 months to be paid £13 per month until the expiry of one year from date of appointment, when their pay ■will be increased to £14. Steamers of the company engaged in* the Australia-Tasmania trade to ba manned in accordance with custom followed m similar boats trading out of Melbourne.
