Daring the hearing of thei Wairarapa petition case, evideuce was g-lven that in tbe case oi alleged double voting the returning officer (Mr Armstrosg) had examined the ballot papers at the place where tha real man voted and credited the candidate accordingly. Sir Justice Conolly Baid such a procasdiug "was au interference with the secrecy of the ballot, and the duty of the officer was to pick out the ballot ps.pe.rs by reference to the numbers, place them apart, record the fact, aud refuse to- give tha vote to either side.
Chkistchxjech, February 8 The annual meeiing of the Canterbury Caledonian Society was held to-night, when a satisfactory balance sheet vras presented. Mr P. Campbell was re-elected president.
