CRIMINAL STATISTICS.
Dating the quarter ended 31«t December, j 1896, 436 persons ia the Dunedin district were j gammoned; apprehended, or taken into custody. j Of this number 346 were males and 90 females. i Forty-sis persons who were apprehended pera i ; discharged, »Dd informations against 34 persons I j were dismissed. Five males and one female j were committed for trial; 254 mules and 68 J ! females were summarily convicted; »nd 19 males j and eight females were otherwise dealt with, j I Some 131 persons wera eutnmoned for drunken- j ness, 88 of the number being males and 43 j females. Three males and one female T7e^e 1 brought before the court for disorderly j behaviour whilst dtuuk; and seven males and j three females for using obscene language. Seventeen persons were charged with breach jof the peace, 16 of the number being l males. Three of the charges were dis- i i missed, and 14 were surstnarily dealt with. ! j There were nina cases o? wiUul damage to j I property, four a«auHs on constables, i?ine ! j cases of common arsault, 4 males and 12 i females nharged with vagrancy, and 20 maleg ; i and 3 females eitrainoned for theft. Oaly two vases of cruelty to auim&'.t c&nie before the court during the quarter. Eleven pewocv were summoned fov false preteucen, eeven of the narnber being summarily df-alt -with. There j v&s one case of wife desertion, one of indecent j assault, and one of threatening behaviour. : One person who was charged with receiving i stolen property wag di»ch»rged, one w,-ib comI mitted for trial on a charge of shooting with > iatenfc to do bodily harm, and one was aimiliarly j dealt with on a charga of stealing from a J dwelling.
